My Travel with Columbus | Dairy of a crew
Captain Columbus |
It was a cool morning on August. I woke up early with great excitement, I was going to board one of Columbus' ships, Nina, as a crew with Columbus! I went to Palos, Spain. All crews gathered there. There were three large ships there, Santa Maria, Pinta, and Nina. Some crews are extremely excited about this expedition, but the others said that the ship will fall of the earth. Columbus was late and he apologized.

The journey started shortly after he arrived. Crowds gathered to see the ships go, they waved at us and shouted joyfully, some cheered.
We started to sail west. The harbor became smaller and smaller as the ship moved. It was the most wonderful feeling in the world. The breezes blew by, and the waters were peaceful. Ah! What a day!

The ship was suddenly filled with a pleasant smell. I realized that it was lunchtime. All men on board headed to the cafeteria. The cook made some terrific lunch--fish, potatoes, and other vegetables. This was our first meal in the ship. We all said our prayers, thanking God for the food he created for us. Some crews were still groaning that we will sail to the edge of the world and fall down a "never-ending waterfall". We ate our yummy meal quite happily, except for the groaning ones.
After lunch, we started to clean up the entire ship, from bottom to top. The crews in the two other ships are also having fun. They tidied their ship, drank wine, and talk. I can't hear what they were talking about, it's too far.
I went to find my cabin. I found a nice room for me and some other crews. It has nice red beds, a desk, and a shelf of books. It's a nice to live.

It's been a week now, no land had been spotted. A sad thing happened recently, some crews got a disease called scurvy, they hadn't ate any fresh fruits and vegetables for a long time. Fortunately, we have a doctor on board. The doctor gave them medicine. However, several of them died. Argh!! What will happen to me?

I heard that Columbus' men plotted to throw Columbus overboard and sail back home. What a ruthless idea! I didn't want to see that, so I told Captain Columbus their cruel idea. Columbus was not happy to hear that! he rushed to the top deck super-duper quickly and told the crews that he promised to turn back if there is no land spotted in three days. The crews agreed. Columbus' life was saved.

In my cabin, I heard some ringing high up in the ship. It was quickly followed by a loud "LAND!".
Land? Crews rushed to the top deck to see. Sure enough, there WAS land!!! It was an island, surrounded by dozens of other island. Our captain, Columbus, was certain that we had reached the islands off the coast of India. All men on the ship, including me, shouted a loud "Hooray!!", and celebrated.
Columbus claimed those islands for Spain. He then told me to come with him and explore the land. Huh? Why me? I had to obey. We walked through the land, and quickly found some black-skin people with black hair, who were willing to see the goods we brought. But as we looked around, we got puzzled. No Indian language is spoken, no gold, no peppers, no riches, and more important -- no spices. Sir Columbus called those who live here "Indians" anyways.
Columbus collected some sweet-potatoes, green peppers, and brought some parrots for the Spanish King and Queen. Finally, Columbus decided to sail home. All the crews were willing to go home.

Many people now will say "Merry Christmas!", but I would rather say "Sad Christmas..." The sea became a murderous monster, shaking every ship on it. Santa Maria was sinking, which is sad. Many people on the sinking Santa Maria died, which is SAD. This Christmas is not merry, it's sad....

Yay!!! We are finally landed on the harbor in Spain. Crowds gathered again and cried joyfully. Some sobbed to hear that their relative died in the journey. I'm so glad to be home. Don't get me wrong, I love adventures, but this was too much.
